Kinchant Dam is arguably the most popular freshwater fishing spot in Mackay. Not originally intended for this purpose, the submerged gullies, extensive weed beds, small creeks and quarry area proved to be ideal fish breeding grounds. When fishing in Kinchant Dam expect to catch Sooty Grunter, spangled perch, catfish varieties, barramundi and sleepy cod. Other excellent freshwater fishing spots recommended by locals include the Rocky Dam Creek and Boundary Creek for Barramundi.

Whitsunday Islands, Australia: Backpacker And Youth Hostels

The range of backpacker and youth hostel accommodation is extensive in Queensland, and is especially aimed at the budget conscious traveller. In the Whitsundays, the common destination for backpacker lodgings is on the Airlie Beach mainland, but a couple of the Whitsunday Island resorts do consider themselves a provider of budget friendly accommodation. Backpacker and youth hostels in the Whitsunday region are a great place to stay, meet new people and organise fantastic day trips from.

There are no backpacker or youth hostels located on any of the Whitsunday Islands, but Hook Island and South Molle Island do provide a form of budget accommodation. In particular, Hook Island resort considers itself to be predominantly aimed at the budget traveller, providing accommodation to suit personal taste, budget and level of luxury.

For backpacker and youth hostel accommodation, Airlie Beach mainland is the place to visit. Most establishments are conveniently situated on the Main Street, (which runs along the beach), and provide ideal bases for mainland and Whitsunday Island exploration. Depending on the individual hostel, there may be dormitory style, double or single rooms available, different types of communal facilities, excellent tour booking services and friendly staff available to answer any Whitsunday Island enquiries.

The island found at the southern entrance of the Whitsunday Passage is Brampton Island. Situated 40 kilometres north-east of Mackay, Brampton Island encourages couples of all ages to enjoy its many activities, dining options, abundance of wildlife and glorious rooms. From one extreme to another, Hayman Island is the most northerly of the Whitsunday Islands. This small island has a resort nestled around a beautiful bay, kilometres of walking tracks and allows guests to walk out to the reef at low tide.

The closest island to Shute Harbour is Daydream Island. Just five kilometres from the mainland, there’s a resort, rejuvenation day spa, an outdoor aquarium and plenty of dining options available to guests of the island. Next is Hamilton Island, the largest inhabited island in the Whitsundays. Offering over 80 different activities and attractions, this island is perfect for families, groups of friends, travelling individuals and couples.

The second largest island in the Whitsunday group is Hook Island. This island offers guests simple accommodation, ideal diving spots and an underwater observatory to explore. Next, proudly hosting the only Club Med resort in Australia, Lindeman Island has plenty of activities and over 20 kilometres of maintained walking tracks to discover. Another popular resort island found in the heart of the Whitsunday group is South Molle Island. Apart from the popular resort islands, most other Whitsunday Islands are available for Camping enthusiasts. Henning Island is probably the most popular island to camp on as it is accessible during all tide times and there is a large bush campsite with basic amenities available to campers. Part of the Lindeman group of islands, Thomas Island is another common Camping spot which is also easily accessible by boat. Lastly, although Whitsunday Island is the largest of the 74 islands and home to the infamous Whitehaven Beach, Camping is the only form of accommodation available on this beautiful island.

Long Island has three resorts on it, and is a popular holiday destination for young and old, families and couples, and even people wishing to get married or honeymoon. There is a wide selection of accommodation available to choose from. This ranges from budget, to beach front rooms; or for the very exclusive, the ultimate luxury of a secluded resort at the South end of the Island. This resort is totally inaccessible by land, to any other day visitors. It is a paradise of peace and tranquillity can only be reached by Helicopter, Seaplane or boat, and caters for just 20 people at a time. Guests staying here often enjoy exploring the other islands with their own private yacht and skipper. They are in the company of turtles and dolphins, wallabies and goannas and all of the beautiful birds of the forest and colourful fish of the reef.

Guest staying in the resorts to the north of Long Island, also have plenty of opportunity to relax, or to join in a variety of activities. There is fine dining available (poolside grills or courtyard restaurants), casual cafes and live entertainment in the evening bars. There is even a night club for visitors who want to party on into the night.

Long Island has something to please everybody, it is a beautiful place to be, and people find it easy to be happy there. Safe anchorage makes it an attractive location for yachties, alternatively it is possible to get to the Island by flying direct to Hamilton Island and then taking a water taxi or ferry (about a 20 minute ride away). It can also be reached by flying to Proserpine airport, taking a coach to Shute Harbour and then a taxi or ferry (also about 20 minutes ride away). Direct Seaplane flights to Long Island, are available from the mainland.
