Walking Tracks Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are known for their fantastic walking tracks amongst natural settings. While staying on a resort island, guests have the chance to discover the rainforest laden National Parks, environmentally friendly nature trails and kilometres of pristine beaches. Also possessing an abundance of Australian wildlife and stunning views over the Coral Sea, the Whitsunday Islands are an excellent destination for walking enthusiasts.

Individual Whitsunday Islands all have their own unique set of walking tracks and offer guests many memorable walking experiences. Firstly, travellers will find over 20 kilometres of great walking tracks on Long Island and around 14 kilometres of twisting trails present on Daydream Island. South Molle Island boasts around 16 kilometres of bushwalking tracks, while Lindeman Island has an approximate total of 20 kilometres. Popular walks on Lindeman Island include the Butterfly Valley path and the challenging climb up Mount Oldfield which offers persistent trekkers panoramic views of Hamilton, Whitsunday and the beautiful Pentecost Islands. Lastly, on Whitsunday Island, walkers are encouraged to walk from Tongue Bay to a nearby lookout and experience the astonishing views over Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.

Whitsunday Island guests will marvel at the beauty found on any of the island walking tracks. The array of flora and fauna is amazing, the views are stunning and walking through some of the world’s oldest rainforest is unforgettable. For non-resort islands, it is advised to stay directly on the permanent trails and always inform a local ranger before deviating or walking off the designated track, for safety reasons.

There’s simply nothing better to clear the mind than a good walk. Where better to do that, than in a pristine setting such as the Whitsundays?
It amazes me though how some tourists just don’t think properly about what they are doing. I have seen some holidaymakers set out on a four hour walk with thongs on their feet, no sunscreen, no hats and no water, (sometimes drinking beer, which will dehydrate them!). For some overseas guests, the sheer scale of our country is something that they cannot fathom. So by all means enjoy our most wonderous natural beauty, but plan and prepare for your trip. You need to think and act responsibly and not leave your safety, in the hands of our dedicated professionals and volunteers.
Some things you may want to think about are: Wear comfortable and covered footwear, plan your route and stick to the paths provided. Tell your friends or relatives of your planned route, when you are leaving and when you plan to return.
Consider hiring an emergency beacon so that if you are in difficulty, get lost or have an accident, you can be found more easily. Mobile phones are not always in range and may not work correctly, so don’t rely on that as your sole source of communication.
Check the weather conditions before you set out and take a weatherproof jacket. Make sure your have plenty of water and nutritious snack foods for energy.
If you have done all of the preparation, then you will have a fabulous and most importantly, a safe time. You will be able to fully enjoy all the natural wonders that the Whitsundays can offer you, whether it be the rainforest, the pristine beaches or the hypnotic Coral Sea.
