Shute Harbour is the major boat and ferry terminal for trips to the Whitsunday Islands and all of the resorts on the Islands; also for trips out to the outer Great Barrier Reef. It has the largest Seaplane airbase in the Southern hemisphere, and the small settlement also has a range of accommodation options for visitors which include hotels, motels, bed and breakfast, apartments, caravan parks and cottages. An information centre in the town, services the town and the port.

Shute Harbour is 157 km north of Mackay and 10 km from Airlie Beach. There are regular bus or taxi services available, too and from the port; they take the winding road through Conway National Park towards the Port. This Park is the largest coastal National Park in Queensland; it covers over 19,000 hectares with many walking paths and Camping and picnic areas for people visiting the area.

There is both day and long term parking facilities at the port. Buses, taxies, water -taxis, ferries, charter boats (both unmanned and crewed) all offer a huge variety of services from this central point, aiming to suit the needs of all visitors.
