Bowen, North Queensland Australia

Situated in the northern region of the Whitsundays, Bowen is proudly North Queensland’s oldest town. Found approximately 1,165 kilometres north of Brisbane and just over 200 kilometres south of Townsville, this destination can also be found just forty minutes drive north of Airlie Beach. Positioned on the shores of Edgecumbe Bay and comprising of eight stunning beaches, Bowen portrays all the characteristics of a beautiful Whitsunday location.

With the cool waters of the Whitsundays lapping at its shores, Bowen’s pristine beaches are one of its main attractions. Horseshoe Bay, Grays Bay and Queens Beach are recognised as the most popular beaches, with Murray Bay, Rose Bay, Kings Beach, Town Beach and Dalrymple Point also comprising of equally astonishing beauty. Just offshore there are fascinating reef networks to explore and Stone Island, which is accessible by ferry and lies approximately two kilometres off the Bowen coastline. Australia’s most northerly coal shipping port can also be found just nineteen kilometres north of Bowen, in a spot known locally as Abbot Point.

The Bowen Shire is a fantastic place for sport and nature lovers to visit. There are a number of sporting clubs scattered around the district which host activities including sailing, soccer, fishing, diving and snorkelling expeditions. For nature enthusiasts, Mullers Lagoon is a sanctuary ideal for waterfowl and bird watching, and in the hinterland at such spots known as Binbee and Collinsville, fossickers will enjoy the opportunity to find amethysts, opalised wood and even sapphires.
